Although the total number of new applications increased in 2009 by 19.4% (19431 in 2009; 16273 in 2008), the number of persons accorded international protection decreased by 3.2%. In comparison to 2008, the number of persons recognised as refugees decreased, while the number of those provided with complementary protection slightly increased. Slovenia witnessed the highest increase in recognitions: 320% compared to 2008. Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland witnessed an increase in the number of new asylum applications, while the rest of the countries in the region showed a decline in applications. English (pdf) |
