The festive season brightens the atmosphere of refugee reception centres in Hungary.

 

Christmas celebrations may help refugee integration in Hungary

 

22 December 2008, Budapest - In the refugee reception centres of Bicske, Békéscsaba and Debrecen, the month of December has been the most colourful and happy period of the year, much awaited and enjoyed by refugee children and their families. At this time of the year, refugee families get acquainted with the traditions of Santa Claus and Christmas in Hungary, they can participate in baking special sweet cookies and they decorate a Christmas tree in each of the centres.

Europe's First Evacuation Transit Centre (ETC)
Opens in Timisoara, Romania

 

UNHCR, IOM and the Ministry of Interior and Administrative Reform signed a Tri-Partite Agreement on 8 May 2008 about the establishment of an Evacuation Transit Centre (ETC) in Timisoara, Romania. UNHCR and IOM will help such vulnerable refugees to leave their first asylum countries and travel in an orderly way to Timisoara. There, in the ETC, the refugees will get temporary accommodation and assistance until their final resettlement to a third country where they can rebuild their lives. World Refugee Day is a salute to the indomitable spirit and courage of the world's refugees, and as such it should be a real celebration. Around the world, this day of festivity and tribute is expressed in a hundred different ways, from stand-up comics and rock concerts to conferences and memorial services.
